Memphis mom painted as child’s killer

A Memphis prosecutor told a jury a mother’s behavior after her baby daughter disappeared points to her being the child’s killer.

Shakara Dickens seemed more concerned with partying and getting new tattoo work as police searched for her 9-month-old daughter, Lauryn, prosecutor Jennifer Nichols said in opening statements Tuesday.

Convicted felon talks about gun at Memphis trial

A convicted drug dealer said Wednesday he helped drug enforcement agents obtain a .45 caliber handgun used in a gang killing by arranging a secret handoff at a Memphis park.

TeMarcus Cartwright testified in the federal trial of cousins Clinton Lewis and Martin Lewis, who are charged with being contract killers for a drug gang led by Craig Petties. Cartwright’s statements about the gun used to kill Marcus Turner in September 2006 have been the focus of the trial since Monday.

Memphis overwhelms Warriors

Mark Jackson must have known there would be nights like this when he decided to give coaching a try and signed with the Warriors last summer. Still, that doesn’t mean he got a wink of sleep Wednesday night.

His team didn’t arrive for the start of the game and quickly found itself down 21-4 to the Memphis Grizzlies. The Warriors rallied and even took a four-point lead in the second quarter. Then they took the rest of the night off, eventually losing 110-92.

Memphis teen indicted in principal’s stabbing

A 16-year-old Memphis boy has been indicted in the fatal stabbing of his high school principal. The Shelby County district attorney’s office said Tuesday that Eduardo Marmolejo has been charged with first-degree murder in the killing of 49-year-old Suzette York.

York was the principal of Memphis Junior Academy, a private school affiliated with the Seventh Day Adventist church.

With names like Isner, Roddick and Raonic in the men’s draw at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships this week, it’s easy to overlook the WTA’s Memphis International also going on through Saturday in Memphis.

A deep and international field came together on the women’s side and close matches throughout the week have been the rule rather than exception at the Racquet Club of Memphis.

Top-seed Petrova ousted in Memphis first round

Italian qualifier Camila Giorgi sent top-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova packing in the first round at the $220,000 Memphis International tennis event. Giorgi ousted the former world No. 3 Petrova in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 on the indoor hardcourts at The Racquet Club of Memphis.

In other action involving seeds, No. 3 Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic routed Georgian Anna Tatishvili 6-3, 6-1; No. 4 Marian Erakovic of New Zealand overcame American Sloane Stephens 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 and Dutchwoman Michaella Krajicek upended No. 6 Brit Elena Baltacha 6-2, 6-1.

Monfils withdraws from Memphis with knee injury

Gael Monfils has withdrawn from the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships because of a right knee inflammation. The Frenchman was scheduled to play in the feature first-round match on Tuesday. Tournament organizers announced Thursday that Monfils’ match will be replaced by John Isner’s first-round match.

Monfils also withdrew from the SAP Open because of right knee inflammation and said Wednesday that he plans to take a brief break from tennis. He will have an MRI on both knees when he returns home.

Tulane Welcome: Memphis to fogelman arena

After a hard fought heartbreaking overtime loss at UTEP on Saturday, the Tulane men’s basketball team gets move forward and take the floor of Fogelman Arena when they face Memphis on Wednesday at 7 p.m. CT in a Conference USA match-up.

The Green Wave (15-9, 3-7 C-USA) fell to UTEP, 54-52, and where led by C-USA Freshman of the Week Ricky Tarrant and Jordan Callahan who each scored 19 points in the loss.

“Our guys have done a great job all season of going to the ‘next play’ and forgetting about what happened,” Tulane head coach Ed Conroy said. “This game with Memphis is a great opportunity for that to happen. We learned our lessons from the game at UTEP and will move forward and go to work. This is a great chance to prove ourselves.”

Memphis awaits impact of mortgage settlement

Now that the federal government and states have hammered out a historic settlement with mortgage servicers, the bigger question will be the exact impact at the local level in cities hardest hit, like Memphis.

In the immediate, the general consensus is that even the largest federal-state settlement in history of $26 billion — with an expected $146 million coming to Tennessee — isn’t enough to stem the tide of massive foreclosures.

Johnny options West Memphis 3 memoir

Johnny Depp looks set to become the latest high-profile film-maker to take a creative interest in the controversial case of convicted child killers the West Memphis Three after optioning a forthcoming memoir by one of their number, Damien Echols.

Echols, who is now in his mid-30s, was convicted in 1993 alongside Jessie Misskelley Jr, and Jason Baldwin, of the murder of three eight-year-old boy scouts in West Memphis, Arkansas. Investigating police at the time labelled the killings part of a satanic ritual. He was freed last year after 18 years on death row under a controversial plea bargain which got the trio out of jail but denied them permission to sue the state authorities for wrongful imprisonment.
